WHAT IS A RETURNING BOOMERANG
A boomerang is a curved throwing stick used mainly by Australian Aboriginal people for hunting and warfare.
Boomerangs would often be decorated with carved drawings and paintings of animals and traditional symbols.
The two main types of boomerangs used by Aboriginal people in Australia were the returning and the hunter killers or kylie boomerang.

Unlike the hunter killer boomerangs that are heavier, these returning boomerangs are lighter and meant to return to the thrower. They were primarily used as a training boomerang for younger Aboriginal men, and were also used to scare game and make animals like a flock of birds rise from a lake and fly in a certain direction.

in summary, the traditional Aboriginal returning boomerang:

A. When thrown they would return to the thrower.
B. Most returning boomerangs look like a V upside down
C. Some Aboriginal tribes in North Queensland used a 4-pointed boomerang
D. Returning boomerangs were mainly used to teach young men how to throw boomerangs – before using the Kylie hunting killer boomerang
E. Returning boomerangs were also used to scare game like birds and kangaroos and to hunt for birds

LEFT OR RIGHT-HANDED THROWERS
We cater for left and right-handed throwers and it does make a real difference to your enjoyment. If you are left-handed, you will find it much easier to throw a left-handed designed boomerang. The left-handed boomerangs are designed to spin and circle in the opposite direction to the right-handed boomerang. All our returning handmade boomerangs come in both versions so please make sure you select your dominant hand throwing version.

WHAT ARE CLAP STICKS
Australian Clap Sticks are the main traditional percussion instrument of all Aboriginal people. They are used to provide rhythmic accompaniment for song and dance. They are often used alongside two wooden boomerangs that are also clapped together in Aboriginal musical song and dance. Clap sticks consist of two sticks crafted from various woods and are often intricately decorated. The usual technique employed when using clap sticks is to clap the sticks together to create a rhythm that goes along with the song.

WHAT IS A BULLROARER
An ancient Aboriginal instrument used to communicate by swinging the bullroarer in rapid circles from a length of twine. The width of the paddle like bullroarer and its thin wooden design produce a type of haunting/warping sound at low frequencies that can be heard of vast distances, particularly if used on top of a hill. You must twirl the twine/string so it will unwind when swung in a circle by your side or over your head.

MAKER AND ARTIST
These traditional artifacts have been handmade and hand painted by prominent Aboriginal artist and artifact maker Josh Skeen. Josh is a fourth-generation Aboriginal. He is the son of world-famous boomerang maker 87-year-old tribal elder Joe Skeen Senior, and works alongside his father at their farm every day in Brisbane, Australia. This message stick and set of clapsticks has been painted in traditional Aboriginal track designs by Josh Skeen.

CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
We provide a certificate of authenticity for each item in this gift pack, stating the heritage of the maker, Josh Skeen. We guarantee that all products are hand made in Australia and genuine handcrafted by Australian Aboriginal peoples.
