WHAT IS A RETURNING
BOOMERANG
This is a 18-inch-wide
returning boomerang featuring burnt art designs and different types of native
animals. The burnt art design features animal tracks at both ends of the
boomerang matching the type of animal painted on the boomerang.
A boomerang is a curved throwing stick used mainly by Australian Aboriginal people for hunting and warfare.
Boomerangs would often be decorated with carved drawings and paintings of animals and traditional symbols.
The two main types of boomerangs used by Aboriginal people in Australia were the returning and the hunter killers or kylie boomerang.
Unlike the hunter killer boomerangs that are heavier, these returning boomerangs are lighter and meant to return to the thrower. They were primarily used as a training boomerang for younger Aboriginal men, and were also used to scare game and make animals like a flock of birds rise from a lake and fly in a certain direction.
in summary, the traditional Aboriginal returning boomerang:
A. When thrown they would return to the thrower.
B. Most returning boomerangs look like a V upside down
C. Some Aboriginal tribes in North Queensland used a 4-pointed boomerang
D. Returning boomerangs were mainly used to teach young men how to throw boomerangs – before using the Kylie hunting killer boomerang
E. Returning boomerangs were also used to scare game like birds and kangaroos and to hunt for birds
WHAT IS A MESSAGE
STICK
The message stick is an
authentic Australian made Aboriginal message stick, handmade and hand painted
by prominent Aboriginal artist and artifact maker Josh Skeen.
Message sticks are a form of
communication between different Aboriginal tribes. Aboriginal tradition says
they were passed between different clans and language groups to establish
information and transmit messages. They were often used to invite neighboring
groups to corroborees, set-fights and ball games. Josh Skeen says they were
also sometimes used like a passport granted by a tribal elder to a messenger to
show other tribes as the messenger asked permission to travel across their
land. Aboriginal elders from different tribes respected each other and message
sticks were used like an official travelling document and the carrier was
treated with respect and allowed safe passage.
WHAT IS A BULLROARER
An ancient Aboriginal
instrument used to communicate by swinging the bullroarer in rapid circles from
a length of twine. The width of the paddle like bullroarer and its thin wooden
design produce a type of haunting/warping sound at low frequencies that can be
heard of vast distances, particularly if used on top of a hill. You must twirl
the twine/string so it will unwind when swung in a circle by your side or over
your head.
MAKER AND ARTIST
These traditional
artifacts have been handmade and hand painted by prominent Aboriginal artist
and artifact maker Josh Skeen. Josh is a fourth-generation Aboriginal. He is
the son of world-famous boomerang maker 87-year-old tribal elder Joe Skeen
Senior, and works alongside his father at their farm every day in Brisbane,
Australia. This message stick and set of clapsticks has been painted in
traditional Aboriginal track designs by Josh Skeen.
