Coloured handle hooked hunting boomerang
Individually hand-crafted from root of the Black Wattle tree, this authentic hand carved boomerangs is a collector’s item.
Black wattle timber is very hard to find and this boomerang has been handmade by a traditional master craftsman.
Hand made by an Aboriginal Elder, Joe Skeen Snr, whose late father, William Skeen, taught him this tradition as a young boy.
Joe Skeen and his family spend many days along river banks looking for the right shaped black wattle timber that Joe can shape in the traditional manner that he was taught over 70 years ago.
This type of boomerang is designed to curve very slightly when thrown. This allows it to stay in the air long enough to cover a large distance. People used these large boomerangs to hunt birds, kangaroos and emus.
This is a traditional hunting boomerang meant to travel in the
direction thrown and not return to the thrower.
Non-returning boomerangs are larger and heavier than the returning
boomerangs and have a hook shape.
The handle is made and painted by Joseph Ian Skeen and family.
